Gotland is a unique island off the east coast of southern Sweden. It can be reached by ferry from Nynashamn, just south of Stockholm, or from Oskarshamn on the southeast coast of Sweden. Gotland has a lot to offer. Visby, city of roses and ruins, is a charming, clean medieval city, now on Unesco’s World Heritage List. Visby is a walled city dating back to the Viking era, with parks and flowers everywhere. Drive one of the many roads around the island to explore the beaches and the sea stacks (rock formations carved by the sea), picturesque fishing villages and deep caves.
Depart by car-ferry from Nynashamn, just southwest of Stockholm, and arrive in Visby, Gotland 3,5 hours later. Drive to your hotel, and explore the city of Visby the rest of the day.
Spend the day in Visby, explore the walled city with it’s guard towers and visit the Botanical Gardens, open year round. The Visby Cathedral, built in 1225, is a must-see. It is Visby’s only remaining medieval church, and is a wonderful piece of architechture.
Drive north from Visby to the northern part of Gotland, where the landscape is harsher. Steep cliffs, nature reserves with hiking trails, and a limestone museum and the Bunge outdoor museum showcasing Gotland’s peasant culture await you.
Drive east towards the sandy beaches with sea stacks, small fishing villages and an old steam train which travel through time in a culturally protected environment. Visit the Torsburgen Nature Reserve with thousand year old caves and the largest ancient castle in all of the Nordic countries.
Drive south today and visit Hoburgsgubben, the most famous sea stack on the island, located on the southern tip of Gotland. Here you can also visit the Kattlund Museum Farm, showing life on a Gotland farm during medieval times. On your way back to Visby, stop by the Tofta Viking Village, a 10th century Viking village, where you can get some hands-on experience in Viking day-to-day life. The village is located in Tofta, just south of Visby.
Check out of your hotel and take the ferry back to the mainland.
