Visiting Riga, Latvia

Visit Riga and you won't be disappointed. The beautiful city of Riga is not only the largest, but it’s also the capital city of Latvia. Founded in 1201 by Albert of Bremen, it served as a base for the Northern Crusades. Riga is currently experiencing a new Renaissance and numerous restoration projects on ancient buildings are turning Riga into one of the most appealing cities in Europe. This attractive city is full of important history, making it one of Latvia’s most interesting and highly sought after vacation destinations.

During your stay in Riga, visit the Freedom Monument, an important memorial honoring the soldiers who were killed in the Latvian War of Independence. Made of granite and copper, this memorial is a very important symbol of independence and freedom of Latvia and serves as the center for public gatherings and many official ceremonies in the city. See the famous Latvian National Opera House where ballets and operas have been performed for centuries, or stroll through the Fine Arts Museum to see ancient works of art. Take a drive along the central boulevards in Riga to experience views of Bastion Hill, the City Canal Parks, the Art Nouveau Buildings, the University of Latvia, and more.

The beautiful Hanseatic City offers an unforgettable trip through ancient picturesque streets of the Old Town. See the Swedish Gate, part of the Riga Wall built in 1698 to allow access to barracks outside of the city, and the Old Riga Castle, situated on the banks of the River Daugava. Today, the President of Latvia resides in the castle, and it is also home to the greatest museums in Riga. Visit the Parliament House or the stunning St. Mary Magdalene’s Church. The important Riga Cathedral is one of the most popular and recognizable landmarks in the country, featured in many paintings, television programs, and photographs.
