Iceland - Greenland flights
Private group transfers and flightseeing over Greenland
SIGHTSEEING AND ACTIVITIES
Join us on one of our most diverse and special tours to Greenland, where domestic flights and the coastal ship will take you along the path of discovery. Experience the most popular sites and towns of Greenland on this tour; the Greenland Ice Sheet in Kangerlussuaq, the capital of Nuuk and, of course, Ilulissat in the Disco Bay area at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world-famous Ilulissat Ice Fjord.
Greenlandic Summer – an explosion of lights
The tour starts in June, July or August, the absolute summertime in Greenland, where the sun reigns over the days. This means that you get many hours of daylight to use for your very own experiences – with an abundance of nature to create an unforgettable holiday full of great impressions!
We have created an itinerary which allows you to have time on your own to discover and explore. The tour guide will always present you with information, stories, guided tours, and practical help.
Arrival in the Town of Icebergs
Start your Greenland adventure out of Iceland with Air Iceland Connect or Air Greenland.
Ilulissat means “the place with icebergs”, which it is indeed. The Kangia Glacier nearby Ilulissat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Icebergs can be seen from all over town and if the weather is clear you will also be able to see the icebergs when flying into the small town with about 4,000 inhabitants.
Private transfer and check in at Hotel Arctic. Hotel Arctic is probably the best hotel in Greenland. It is a 4 Star hotel with a 5 Star view.
Your personal guide will meet you at Hotel Arctic and take you on a tour around the charming town and tell you about the history and how people live 300 kilometers North of the Polar Circle. There may even be time to stop for a drink in one of the small cosy cafes around town.

Kayaking Experience and private boat tour among Icebergs looking for whales
This morning, gear up and have a safety talk before a short walk to the charming historic center of Ilulissat. When everyone is comfortable we will start our activity, which embraces all the wonders from this destination. In our tour you will paddle in a kayak (a Greenlandic typical mean of transport) while you will witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord. For those not interested in kayaking, alternatives can be arranged that include enjoying these icebergs.
Kayaking in Ilulissat is a unique activity for two reasons. The first one is very obvious, kayaking is possibly the best way to experience the Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Being at the sea level, without any noise and just using your own body to sail among icebergs. The second one, perhaps not that known among people visiting us, is that 4000 years ago people already used kayaks for travelling and hunting in Ilulissat.
The kayaking guides are experienced and certified, using modern expedition equipment. Safety protocols will make it possible for you to kayak among icebergs, even if you have never been in a kayak before. Besides, they will introduce you to the fascinating world of the original kayak “qajaq”, invented in Greenland and made out of drifting wood and animal skin.
Transfer back to Hotel Arctic (or lunch in town if you like).
Transfer from hotel to harbour by car. Your private boat is waiting for your evening cruise. Your seafood platter is served onboard while enjoying the view.
The humpback whale is one of the animals in the world that moves furthest. They come to the Disko Bay in the summer to eat large amounts of krill and small fish. The whale typically comes from Haiti and Puerto Rico, where they breed in winter. Humpback whales can grow up to 15 meters long and can weigh up to 30 tons.
The humpback whale is the whale we usually see in the Disco Bay, and it is easily recognizable on the beautiful tail. To experience these giants of the sea at close range is almost a spiritual experience that overwhelms many.
The glacier producing icebergs is called Sermeq Kujalleq. It is located approx. 70 km inside the ice fjord, where all sailing is impossible. It is the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere and the world’s fastest ice stream with 40 meters per day. Ice production is 46 cubic kilometres per year (equivalent to U.S. annual water consumption). The largest icebergs are 1.5 cubic kilometres. Transfer to Hotel Arctic. (B, D)
Boat cruise and overnight stay in Disko Island
Breakfast at Hotel Arctic before your tour to Disko Island.
Transfer to the harbour for your boat to Qaqertarsuaq (Disko Island). Qeqertarsuaq is the largest island in Greenland and an exceptional place in the truest sense of the word. Everything about it is the first, the largest, or the only. Qeqertarsuaq stands alone on the great Disko Island far off Greenland’s west coast, and the Lyngmark Glacier that towers above the town is the only place in Greenland to go dog sledding in summer. The natural environment around Qeqertarsuaq is so fertile with angelica and diverse species that it is literally like no other place in North Greenland.
Transfer from the harbour to Hotel Disko Island.
Hotel Disko Island is located in the town centre in five different buildings standing close to one another. One of these buildings is the former colonial government residence, now called Hotel Disko. The other buildings are Dora, Levi, Linda and the restaurant building, Nilak, where we will enjoy lunch.
Kuannit is placed east of Qeqertarsuaq. The walk passes the heliport, Arctic Station, Red River and the opening of “Blæsedalen”. On the trail you have the 900 meter high “Skarve mountain” on the one side and a spectacular view of Diskobay on the other side. At Kuannit, incredible basalt formations are present, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Kuannit area is very fertile for Greenlandic standards, and mosses, lichens, flowers and especially angelica plants are present there. In the summertime, whales are often spotted in the sea just below Kuannit.
Dinner at Restaurant Nilak. (B, D)
Qeqertarsuaq Town Walk, Sermermiut Hike and transfer back to Ilulissat
Breakfast at the Restaurant Nilak.
Guided town walk in Qeqertarsuaq, focusing in resent as well as older history. Qeqertarsuaq has approx. 850 inhabitants and is the only town on Disko Island. In Danish the town’s name is “Godhavn”, which refers to the well protected natural harbor. In Diskofiord is the only village situated called Kangerluk. Qeqertarsuaq is a well functioning and peaceful town with school, nursing home, hospital and a small museum. Primary occupation is hunting and fishing, especially fishing for snow crabs and lumpfish is important. There are numerous voluntary associations in town, and the new artificial grass soccer field with stranded icebergs in the background is always busy with playing children.
Afternoon boat transfer back to Ilulissat and bus transfer to Hotel Arctic.
Transfer to start of the hike. You will hike to Sermermiut along the icefjord, where you will be able to see natural graveyards from our ancestors. In the old days (not that long ago) our ancestors were put to rest in places where they could see the sea. And since we have permafrost in Greenland we couldn’t just dig a hole. Instead we covered them in rocks, that you will still see today - you may even be able to see their bones. If that is too scary, we will just focus on the fantastic view of massive icebergs. On our way to or from the Sermermiut hike we will have time to stop and pet the sled puppies. Transfer back to Hotel Arctic. (B, D)
Day Tour to Eqi glacier - the calving glacier and FLIGHTSEEING over the Icebergs
The comfortable private boat will take us to Eqi Glacier.
Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fiord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible by boat to get very close to the glacier and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are enormous and the sight of the icebergs, crashing into the water, is breathtaking.
We sail in modern and convenient boats for our excursion to Eqi. The route goes north along the coast passing Bredebugt, the settlement of Oqaatsut and the big fiord system called Pakitsoq, where whales and seals often are seen. Further on through the Ataa Strait, which is surrounded by steep mountains with bird life and waterfalls. Our ice secured boats lie approximately 2 hours in front of the glacier and wait for the ice to calve, while a delicious lunch is served.
Transfer to Hotel Arctic.
On return, we will do a late afternoon flightseeing over the area. Transfer from Hotel Arctic to the airport. The view from above has no parallel. You will be going on a small aircraft for only 5 passengers to do a sightseeing flight over the icebergs (60 minutes).
During the flight you will fly over the northern glacier "Sermeq Avangnardleq", where we make a turn to get perfect view of the glacier. Next up is the main attraction, the UNESCO world heritage site, the Isua Glacier. This, being the biggest producer of icebergs in the northern hemisphere, will leave you speechless. This enormous glacier is constantly feeding the icefjord with newly formed icebergs, that we will pass while flying along the fjord in the lowest permissible altitude, to get a sense of the impressive scale. When reaching the mouth of the icefjord, we turn south passing the small settlement Ilimanaq, where we will try to spot whales surfacing the bay. On the way back to the airport, you get to see beautiful Ilulissat from above during the approach for landing.
Dinner at Hotel Arctic. (B, D)

Sila means “weather” or “state of mind” in Greenlandic. Both elements play important roles when traveling in Greenland, which to many is like traveling for the first time or unlike anywhere else that they have ever been. Greenland is one of the only places on Earth, where you still can’t control Mother Nature - if she is in rage, storms will prevent you from flying or going on the tour you had planned. But when she calms down you will be rewarded with a magnificent, raw, wild and beautiful nature and the Midnight Sun and icebergs huge as houses. Then you feel small and in awe of what this world is also like.
Your escort for this tour will be local guide, Lykke Geisler Yakaboylu.
"My family is from the Disko Bay and my mother grew up among three sisters and two brothers in a traditional hunting family, where my aataa (grand father), Mathias, would dogsled to go hunting and my aanaa (grand mother), Kathrine, would use everything from the seal for food and clothing (she was also very skilled in making the women's national costume). I'm proud to be out of a family of skilled hunters and dogsled mushers. Today hunting, fishing and dogsledding is still an important part of everyday life in the Diskobay area and I love watching the fishing boats among the icebergs fishing for halibut or cod. Ilulissat is all about the icebergs and they never stop to impress - it is like an ever changing art gallery. It is the cool fresh air, the changing light and smiling local people that I love to share with travelers."
Please note alternative arrangements can be made for those not wanting to participate in certain activities. These can be decided on during your tour.
