Lapland as a Travel Destination

Lapland is a region in the far north of Europe, spanning Norway, Sweden, Finland, and some of Russia. It’s famous for its snowy winters, reindeer, the Northern Lights, and being “home” to Santa Claus (especially in Rovaniemi, Finland). 

In summer, Lapland transforms into a land of endless daylight thanks to the Midnight Sun (where the sun doesn’t set for weeks). It’s great for hiking, seeing wildlife (like reindeer and moose), and experiencing the unique Sámi culture.

Lapland has many exciting destinations with amazing spots depending on the season and the experience you’re looking for! Here are some of the most famous ones:

Finland

• Rovaniemi – The “official” hometown of Santa Claus, with Santa Claus Village, Arctic Circle crossing, and Arktikum museum.
• Levi is the most popular ski resort and is great for summer hiking and mountain biking.
• Pyhä-Luosto National Park has many stunning hiking trails and the Amethyst Mine, where you can dig gemstones.
• Inari and Lake Inari are the heart of Sámi culture. They are a beautiful lake for boat trips and the Siida Sámi Museum.

Sweden

• Abisko National Park is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in winter and offers amazing hiking in summer (the start of the Kungsleden Trail).
• Kiruna – Home to Sweden’s biggest mine and the famous Icehotel (in Jukkasjärvi), rebuilt annually.

Norway

• Tromsø is a lively Arctic city with great food, museums, and Northern Lights tours.
• Nordkapp (North Cape) is mainland Europe’s northernmost point, with dramatic cliffs overlooking the Arctic Ocean.
• Lofoten Islands (technically not Lapland, but close) offer breathtaking fjords, fishing villages, and stunning hiking trails.

Russia

• Murmansk is the world’s largest Arctic city, with Soviet-era history, icebreaker ships, and great Northern Lights spots.
