A short Norwegian fjords cruise doesn't have to mean a single day on the water. This one gives you two nights sailing from Trondheim to Bergen on Havila - one of the most eco-friendly passenger ships in the world - with the Atlantic Ocean Road, Hardangerfjord, and the Flåm Railway built into the same nine-day route.
Oslo to Trondheim by train. Coast to Bergen by ship. The rest by fjord, funicular, and foot.
The full day-by-day itinerary is below.

Tour Itinerary

Welcome to the Kingdom of Norway – a country famous for some of the most beautiful fjords in the world!

Upon arrival, make your own way from the airport to your hotel. A private airport transfer can be pre-booked in advance.

Depending on your arrival time, you may already have an opportunity to start exploring Oslo today. Take a leisurely walk through the city center and along Karl Johan’s Gate, Oslo’s main street, lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. You can also discover some of the city’s landmarks and get your first glimpse of the Norwegian capital, home to the royal family.

Later, meet your Tour Leader at the hotel reception for an informative welcome meeting and an introduction to your upcoming journey. If you arrive late and are unable to attend the meeting, your Tour Leader will leave a note at the reception with information about the new meeting time and location.

After breakfast, depart the hotel around 7:30 AM for the train journey to Trondheim. The train is scheduled to arrive in Trondheim around 2:30 PM, depending on the current timetable. Sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way as the train travels through the Norwegian countryside, passing the shores of Lake Mjøsa, Norway’s largest lake, and continuing through the scenic Vinstra region.

Upon arrival, enjoy a two-hour panoramic city tour of Trondheim, ending at your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city at your own pace. Trondheim is Norway’s third-largest city and has a fascinating history dating back to the Viking Age. Vikings settled at the mouth of the Nidelva River in the 10th century, and the city was known as Nidaros until the 16th century.

Today, Trondheim is a charming, green, and vibrant city, perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll through its pedestrian streets and historic neighborhoods, and enjoy its lively cafés and colorful architecture. The panoramic city tour includes a glimpse of the magnificent Nidaros Cathedral, one of the finest Gothic buildings in Northern Europe and one of Norway’s most important historical landmarks.

After breakfast, board the Hurtigruten coastal ship by 9:00 AM at the latest. Your journey begins as you sail through the broad Trondheim Fjord, surrounded by rolling farmland, before continuing along Norway’s dramatic coastline and out into the open sea.

Today, you have the option to disembark in Kristiansund and join an optional excursion along the spectacular Atlantic Ocean Road (supplement applies). Often described as one of the world’s most beautiful drives, this scenic route winds its way across small islands and rocky skerries, connected by a series of impressive bridges. After the excursion, rejoin the ship in Molde and continue your coastal journey. The Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsveien) is an 8.3-kilometer scenic coastal route between Kristiansund and Bud. One of Norway’s designated Scenic Routes, it crosses several small islands and islets over the open sea, connected by eight dramatic bridges. The ever-changing landscape of ocean, islands, and mountains makes this one of Norway’s most memorable road journeys.

The last day of the cruise takes you through a diverse coastal landscape of bare rocky mountains and a maze of sounds and waterways between many islands. The great fjords and glaciers are situated inland. Bergen awaits at the end of the voyage.  Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway. As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, the Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture, and exciting urban life all year around.

Lunch on board of the cruise.  Arrival to Bergen at 14:45

Upon arrival meet your local guide and enjoy a 2 hour tour of the city of Bergen. Pass through the most emblematic places such as the Hanseatic Bryggen, with the church of Mary, the Hakon fortress and the famous fish market.

After breakfast, enjoy spectacular views of Bergen and the surrounding mountains. Begin the day with a ride on the Fløibanen funicular, one of Norway’s best-known and most popular attractions. The journey to the top of Mount Fløyen, located approximately 320 meters above sea level, takes just 5–8 minutes and offers beautiful panoramic views over Bergen, the harbor, and the surrounding landscape.

After your funicular ride, enjoy a tasting platter featuring some of Norway’s specialties, such as smoked salmon, fresh shrimp, and hot-smoked whale, at one of the restaurants near the famous Fish Market.

In the afternoon, embark on a scenic round-trip fjord cruise from Bergen through the beautiful Osterfjord to the narrow Mostraumen Strait. Along the way, admire Bergen’s colorful Bryggen wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as dramatic mountainsides, cascading waterfalls, and spectacular fjord scenery.

Return to Bergen in the afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to explore the city, relax, or discover more of Bergen at your own pace.

Enjoy a leisurely morning in Bergen with free time to explore the city at your own pace. Alternatively, you may visit the Bergen Aquarium (optional entrance), where you can discover more than 60 tanks featuring Nordic marine life, tropical species, and fascinating creatures from coastal waters to the depths of the ocean.

Later, transfer to the pier to board a high-speed passenger boat for a spectacular journey through some of the most scenic landscapes of Western Norway. The cruise takes you along the coast and into the Sognefjord region, one of Norway’s most breathtaking natural areas and part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

As you leave Bergen, the boat passes a beautiful mix of islands, fishing communities, and sheltered coastal waterways. Around Lavik and Nordeide, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous. Once you enter the Sognefjord, the scenery becomes truly dramatic, with steep mountainsides rising directly from the deep blue waters.

As you continue toward Balestrand and Leikanger, look out for picturesque fjord villages, orchards, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped mountain peaks in the distance. Sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the most scenic journeys in Western Norway.

Enjoy a leisurely morning in Leikanger, one of the charming orchard villages along the Sognefjord. The village enjoys a sunny location along the fjord, surrounded by fruit orchards, forested hillsides, and spectacular mountain scenery.

Around midday, board the express boat to Flåm. Upon arrival, you will have approximately two hours before your train departure, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed lunch. This is also a wonderful opportunity to sample the region’s famous local cider, produced from the orchards along the Sognefjord.

At 4:00 PM, board the famous Flåm Railway, one of the world’s most spectacular railway journeys. The train climbs from Flåm through a dramatic mountain landscape to Myrdal, a mountain railway station and important junction located approximately 13 kilometers from Flåm. The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is one of the steepest standard-gauge railway lines in the world. The journey takes you through breathtaking scenery, passing steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, the historic Rallar Road, and 20 tunnels carved through the mountains. Along the way, numerous viewpoints reveal spectacular landscapes that make this one of Norway’s most memorable train journeys.

At Myrdal, change trains and continue by regional train toward Oslo, eastward across the spectacular Hardangervidda plateau, Northern Europe’s largest mountain plateau. Depending on the season and daylight hours, you may see alpine lakes, vast open tundra, distant glaciers, and isolated mountain stations. The train gradually descends toward eastern Norway, arriving in Oslo late in the evening.

The remainder of the day is at leisure. Take some time for last-minute shopping and pick up a few Viking-themed souvenirs before your departure.

Transfer to the airport is on your own. A private airport transfer can be pre-booked in advance.

If you depart next morning, consider an optional addition to this tour that includes: 1 additional night at the hotel, and a 3 hour cruise on a traditional wooden ship through Oslo Fjord including a fjord style buffet with plenty of shrimps, fresh bread, butter, green salad, dill, mayonnaise and lemon (18:3021:30).

Hello Dora! The tour was fabulous! We loved it very much. Our guide, Janis, was the best guide one could wish for, very informative, attentive, and fast-thinking in certain situations. The cities we visited were beautiful, interesting, and we had a lot of fun there. The hotels - very well chosen, with good breakfast and excellent service. We learned a lot during this trip, and it didn't seem too long as it was fun to travel with nice fellow travelers, a safe driver, and a fantastic guide. Local guides were very good, as well. Thank you for this unique experience. Regards, Dana Reeds

Dora,
I wanted to thank you for creating a very memorable trip for our family. Everything was outstanding - the pace of the trip, regions visited, modes of transportation, drivers and guides. It truly was all that I hoped it would be for all of us. A beautiful tribute to my husband and a once-in-a-lifetime memory making vacation that I, and I'm sure my entire family (all seven decades in age), will treasure forever. Each day I find that I'm "unpacking" more joy and appreciation for the time we had together.

With Gratitude,
Mary Franch
