Royal Stockholm Shore Excursion
The trendy and bohemian area of the city, Södermalm, offers small wooden houses from the 1700s, fantastic views of the city, fashion, design and great local bars.
Gamla Stan or Old Town as we would say in English, is where everything once began. With its narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets, this island is home to the Royal Palace. Stories and legends from days long past will make history come to life all around us!
The Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet): The Royal Palace stands on the island of Gamla Stan, and is the King’s official residence. It has 608 rooms. (Allow us to explain the Swedish idea of ‘lagom’ when we visit the palace and learn that every rule has its exceptions. Especially for the rulers.) It is also the setting for most of the monarchy’s official receptions. As we see the Royal Palace we will also learn more about the Swedish Royal Family including the current King Carl XVI Gustav, his wife, Queen Silvia and their three children.
The Cathedral (Storkyrkan): Next to the Royal Palace we find the Cathedral, which is noted to be Stockholm’s second oldest building. It is also home to royal weddings and the original statue of St. George and the Dragon, constructed entirely out of wood.
The city center of Stockholm is known as Norrmalm. It is the focal point of modern Stockholm with great shopping opportunities and featuring a backdrop of City Hall, the venue for the Nobel Prize Banquet.
Östermalm is the city’s most fashionable neighborhood with stately apartment buildings, fantastic architecture and scenic walkways.
Djurgården is better known as the outdoor recreation center for the city locals as well as home to many of the city’s museums, the Vasa Museum, the Open Air Museum of Skansen and the latest addition, ABBA the Museum.
The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet): The Vasa ship was built between 1625 and 1628 as the pride and joy of the Swedish navy. As she embarked on her maiden voyage she fired a big salute, sailed for 20 minutes then went straight to the bottom of the sea. Today the Vasa ship lies before us 98 % intact. This is a WOW experience!
