The Village of Igaliku

Igaliku is one of those places in Greenland that feels like another world — peaceful, remote, and surrounded by stunning scenery. Tucked into the head of a deep fjord in southern Greenland, it is a small settlement with only a few colorful houses, green pastures in summer, and ancient Norse ruins that tell of the Vikings who once settled here.
You can travel to Igaliku by boat from the town of Narsarsuaq to an out-of-the-way dock named Itilleq, followed by a pleasant 4 km walk down a gravel road called the King’s Road, where there are joyful views of the fjord and the mountains in the distance. When you reach Igaliku, you feel you have left the modern world far away.

The village is known for its Norse history. In the 12th century, it was the religious center of Norse Greenland. Remains from the old bishop’s residence also still stand, giving the landscape an ancient and mystical feel.

Igaliku feels warm and inviting despite its isolation. There are a couple of guesthouses, a basic café, and some of the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet. In summer, the region comes to life, filled with wildflowers, grazing sheep, and hordes of hikers in the nearby valleys and waterfalls.

In winter, it’s a quiet, snow-draped escape, a fit for those looking for solitude and beautiful Arctic scenery.

For those who fancy off-the-beaten-path destinations, Igaliku will feel like magic — a blend of history, wildness, and that peculiar, peaceful quiet that only Greenland can offer.
