A 4½ - hour flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq with Air Greenland allows you to prepare for your Greenland adventure. As the plane approaches Greenland, the sight of nunataks and the vast icy desert foreshadows what is to come.
During your Greenland tour, you will stay at the Kangerlussuaq Hotel. It is located in the airport building, and you only need to carry your luggage from the baggage claim to the reception. Spacious rooms have either a view of the settlement with its surroundings or
the “Koekkenfjeld” (Mount Hassel).
Kangerlussuaq is close to the majestic mountains and the Greenland Ice Sheet. This is the only area where you can get up close and personal with wild reindeer and musk oxen.
After check-in, a short information meeting will be held at the nearby hostel, Polar Lodge. You will get further information about the Kangerlussuaq area and its many excursion options here. Afterward, we will tour the old American airbase on a guided bus tour, giving you insight into the area’s fascinating history and nature.
Overnight in Kangerlussuaq.
The area around Kangerlussuaq is the only inhabited place in Greenland’s inland. The climate is continental, with very stable weather conditions. Initially, this was also the main reason the Americans chose this place for their base. If you go for a walk in the area, there are still remnants from that time to see.
The Greenland Ice Sheet is the second-largest ice sheet in the world. It takes up 80% of Greenland and has continuously attracted scientists and expeditions. It is a truly unique experience to look at the enormous ice field and feel the forces of nature. On our way, we pass the beautiful Russell Glacier, a 60-meter-high vertical wall of ice that is a sight to behold.
