Due to a very high demand for car rentals during the summer high season, Iceland Travel can not guarantee a specific type of car.

Similar types from different manufacturers are placed within the same group and we will do our best to provide you with the best available car in each Price group.

Our selfdrive packages include CDW, unlimited mileage, VAT, a GPS system and two authorized drivers. Read more about included and optional car insurances.

Please note that all car rentals require a valid driver license and a credit card to finalize the rental papers. This is for the insurance of the car.

Day 1  : Arrival

Your Iceland tour starts today! You will stay tonight in Reykjavík (transfer from Keflavík airport not included).

Day 2  : Geysir – Gullfoss – Skógar – Dyrhólaey - Vík (208 mi)

Exploding Geysers  Waterfalls  Puffin Colony  Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore

Breakfast at your hotel.  Start the day with a short city sightseeing of Reykjavik. From Reykjavik head through the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi.  Visit the nearby Fákasel Icelandic Horse Park where you can get to know a little more about the unique Icelandic horse breed.   Head on to the Golden Circle natural wonders.   ExploreGullfoss, the "Golden Waterfall", and the nearby Geysir hot spring area to see the famous Geysir and Strokkur, as well as numerous other hot springs andboiling mud pools. Continue along the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss andSkogafoss before continuing to Dyrholaey* nature reserve. Continue to the village of Vik.

Dinner and overnight stay in the Vik area.

*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season in spring, approximately mid-May until June 25th.

Day 3  : Vík - Skaftafell National Park - Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon - Höfn (190 mi)

Lava Fields  Europe’s Largest National Park  Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs – Europe’s Largest Glacier
Today you will cross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the earth before reaching the small town of Kirkjubæjar klaustur, a former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent. The tour continues over Skeiðarársandur sands to Skaftafell National Park. We will then continue to the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon to see the birthplace of icebergs. Throughout the day we are afforded magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. Overnight is spent in the Höfn area.

Day 4  : Höfn - East Fjords - Egilsstaðir (193 mi)

We will drive from Höfn through Almannaskarð pass today, stopping to admire the majestic coastline along the way. We will continue to the towering mountains plunging vertically into the sea that form the magnificent East Fjords. There we will explore Petra’s renowned collection of local stones and minerals and then spend the night in the Egilsstaðir area.

Day 5  : Lake Mývatn Area (190 mi)

Highland Desert  Bizarre Lava Formations  Geothermal & Volcanic Activity  Rich Birdlife  Protected Salmon River

Breakfast at your hotel.  Explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateauModrudalsoraefi as you head towards the Lake Myvatn area. On the way, stop at Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall.  Continue onwards to Namaskard pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colours. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, including thepseudo craters at Skutustadir and the Laxa Salmon River. One of the Myvatn area's claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general.

Dinner and overnight stay in the Myvatn area.

Day 6  : Lake Mývatn Area - Akureyri (100 mi)

Waterfall “Of the Gods”  Folk Museum – The Beautiful Troll Peninsula

Breakfast at your hotel.  Start the day by exploring the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the magnificent Godafoss waterfall and the old turf farm Laufas. Afterwards, visit Akureyri, the colourful northern “capital“ of Iceland.  The town has charming buildings and beautiful view of the Eyjafjordur Fjord.  After spending some time in Akureyri, continue along the coastal roads of Eyjafjordur and the Troll Peninsula.  This is a beautiful drive along steep mountains with amazing views over the Arctic Sea and black sand coastline.  The destination is Siglufjordur, set in a beautiful fjord of the same name.  This town has some of the finest timber buildings in the country, beautifully restored to their original glory.   The evening and dinner is on your own at one of the town´s restaurants.  Siglufjordur is a very enjoyable and friendly town for an evening stroll. 

Overnight in Siglufjörður.  Dinner is on own.

Day 7  : Skagafjörður - Borgarnes (205 mi)

Fertile Farmlands  Glacial Rivers  Unique Viking Horse with Demonstration
Majestic mountains and narrow passes lead to Skagafjörður for an introduction of the unique Icelandic horses that have a special fifth gait - the tölt. Towards the village of Blönduós built on both sides of the river Blanda with Hrútey Island, we will find a protected nature reserve located in this popular salmon river. Later, we will cross the Holtavörðuheiði plateau through Borgarfjörður to the beautiful town of Borgarnes. Tonight we will stay in the Borgarnes area.

Day 8  : Borgarfjörður - Þingvellir - Reykjavík (143 mi)

Europe’s Largest Hot Spring  Picturesque Waterfalls – National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO)
This morning we drive to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world. A stop will be made to admire the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls before continuing over the breathtaking Kaldidalur mountain pass. The journey continues to Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest lake, and Þingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world’s first parliament held outdoors. Overnight is spent in Reykjavík.

Day 9  : Departure

Your tour of Iceland ends today. We hope you've enjoyed your trip! (Transfers to the airport are not included.)
