One of the beauties of visiting Iceland in the late fall and wintertime is that you may well be lucky enough to experience one of Mother Nature´s most amazing phenomena – the Northern Lights.

From the town of Hveragerdi on Iceland´s south coast, we head off in the hope of spotting these elusive lights as they weave and dance their magical way across the northern heavens. However, in hunting for the Auora Borealis, patience is the name of the game.

To ensure a more personal and enjoyable tour we only have small groups. In addition, we bring along a snack of traditional Icelandic food so as to offer you an interesting additional cultural insight.

Back above ground it´s time to get the adrenaline pumping as we hop aboard a super jeep and ride across the rugged lava landscape in the shadow of the local active volcano, Hengill. We use one of the hot springs or the ground´s natural heat to cook our dinner or lunch.

The icing on the cake has to be the awesome Zen-like experience of bathing in a natural hot spring. This is literally where you become one with your natural surroundings.

Snow Shoeing & Hiking Adventure From Hveragerdi

Winter in Iceland is a wonderland. But imagine having this magical experience while hiking across one of the country´s most actively volcanic areas. Doing so means you get to see the amazing contrasts as steam billows from geothermal vents here and there in the snowy wasteland. On this tour we snow shoe across a snow-covered lava field in the shadow of the active volcano Hengill. Here is scenery guaranteed to take your breath away. Our knowledgeable guide will select the area having the best conditions for snow shoeing and on the way we stop at a scenic location for a hot refreshment. Your guide will also fill you in on the unique geology of the area and how the locals ingeniously harness the energy that´s literally bubbling beneath their feet.

Horseback riding

This tour takes us through meadows, lava fields and a small river. On our way we enjoy the beautiful scenery of volcanic mountains and farmland, passing several farms which give us an idea of how agriculture has developed in the last decades. Nice riding trails give a good opportunity to experience the special gait of the Icelandic horse “tölt”. At the end of the tour you are invited for coffee and home-made cake.

Hot Spring Mountain Circle Hike Tour From Hveragerdi

Hveragerdi town on Iceland´s south coast is located right in the middle of a highly active volcanic area. It´s literally sitting on a bubbling cauldron of geothermal activity fuelled by magma pushing upwards towards the earth´s surface. That explains the plumes of steam rising from the ground here and there on the surrounding mountainsides.

On this tour we drive a short distance out of town and hike the scenic trail into Reykjadalur or “Steam Valley”. As we explore this geothermal wonderland we see there´s a lot of beauty packed into this short hike. The highpoint of the trip of course is to bathe in a natural hot spring. As you relax, drink in the stunning natural winter beauty of your surroundings.
